As part of National Safeguarding Adults Week (18th to 24th November 2019); the Keeping Adults Safe in Shropshire Network and Telford Safeguarding Partnership held a joint event to raise the profile of the issue of Domestic Abuse and Older People.
Over 100 delegates attended the event from organisations across Shropshire and Telford to better understand the specific needs and issues for older people who are at risk of or experiencing domestic abuse.
There were a number of key speakers and presentations at the event including:
- Lisa Smith, Assistant Director from Research in Practice for Adults who provided an overview of Domestic Abuse and Adult Safeguarding; and explained the concept of coercive control
- Workers from Shropshire Domestic Abuse Service who provided an overview of the work of Shropshire Domestic Abuse Service and supported a survivor of domestic abuse to share her story with delegates.
- Diane Harding, Hospital Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (HIDVA) Lead from West Mercia Women's Aid who provided an overview of the HIDVA Service available across both Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals.
- A presentation from SafeLives highlighting the findings from their national research of Domestic Abuse and Older People.
There were also a number of stalls from various organisations serving Shropshire and Telford who provided an opportunity to network and offer further information into the wide range of services available across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
